Newcomers to German Heritage Days — Take Heed!

The people who invariably have the most fun at Ft. Loramie’s German Heritage Days are those who know the words and sing along with the tunes most often played in the festival hall.

The song Ein Prosit will be played thousands of times throughout the festival. It is the German Heritage Days theme song.

When you hear the band strike up “Ein Prosit” it is good etiquette to jump to your feet and bellow out the words, then drain your stein to lubricate your vocal chords.

Many people sing “Ein Prosit” and other drinking songs without actually knowing the words. Here’s your chance to avoid these embarrassing situations. Learn the words to Ein Prosit and many other German Heritage Day favourites listed in this book. For those revellers not of German ancestry — and whose late evening tongues may have difficulties with the more delicate syllables — English verses are included.

Translations of some German words

Prost / Prosit — Cheers
G’suffa — down it
Gemütlichkeit — friendliness and enjoyment
Eins, zwei — one, two
Brüderlein — little brothers
